How to stay healthy this cold and flu season

(NC) From skating and skiing to cozy nights at home curled up on the couch, the winter season has so many activities to get excited about. To make sure colds, flu’s and other respiratory illnesses don’t get in the way of your winter plans, follow these tips to help you and those around you stay healthy. 

  1. Care for your immune system. Keep your body resilient by eating well, taking vitamins, exercising regularly, getting enough sleep and managing stress.  
  2. Get your flu? and COVID-19? shot?s?Annual shots help your immune system fight off the current year’s version of the flu. Remember, it takes about two weeks for vaccines to fully kick in. 
  3. Keep hydrated. Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated and???? fight off germs. Get a fun, colourful glass or water bottle to keep with you and remind you to take sips throughout the day. ?     ? 
  4. Keep your hands clean. Wash your hands for at least 20 seconds, especially after touching shared surfaces or coughing and sneezing. On the go? Keep sanitizer with at least 70 per cent ethyl alcohol handy.  
  5. Master the “vampire cough.” Even when you’re not sick, when you feel a cough or sneeze coming, cover your mouth and nose with your elbow to help keep germs from spreading. 
  6. Stay home. If despite your best efforts, you end up feeling unwell, it’s crucial to stay home to avoid spreading what’s ailing you. Rest and recover, while minimizing contact with others, before getting back to your regular activities.
