(NC) As the weather turns colder, keeping yourself healthy and resilient against the common cold and flu becomes a top priority. While you stock up on warm layers, it’s easy to forget the importance of a healthy gut as you prepare for the season ahead. What’s frequently missing from this approach is an understanding of how these bodily systems work together.

Gut health is foundational

A recent survey shows that while 80 per cent of Canadians are interested in the connection between gut health and immunity, only 24 per cent actively use probiotics for this purpose. According to the survey, many Canadians only focus on getting enough vitamin C and vitamin D, and often don’t consider foods and probiotics that support gut health. While all vitamins are important, we often miss how closely they rely on our digestive system.

The digestive system is essential for properly absorbing the vitamins and nutrients we rely on to support immune function. Rather than viewing digestive wellness and immune support as separate categories, it’s much more helpful to see them as collaborative partners.

Probiotics are also important contributors to gut health. These are live micro-organisms that, when consumed in adequate amounts, can help support your health. Nutrient-dense dairy foods, such as yogurt, are excellent delivery vehicles because they help naturally buffer these beneficial bacteria against your stomach’s acidity, helping them reach your intestines alive.

“The bacteria that make up our gut microbiome play important roles in our immune system. And we know that looking after our microbiome can be simple,” says Janna Boloten, dietitian and director of nutrition and scientific affairs at Danone Canada. “The key is finding ways to nourish the gut microbiome consistently that work for you, day after day, so that you can easily integrate them into your usual eating pattern.”

You don’t have to make huge changes to have an impact

Small daily choices make a significant difference over time. One example of turning a science-based practice into an everyday habit is adding a probiotic yogurt to your morning routine.

Immune system support doesn’t require a dramatic lifestyle overhaul or restrictive diets. By prioritizing simple, consistent habits that nurture your digestive system every day, Canadians can more easily support their gut health and overall well-being.

You can empower your wellness journey with science-backed nutrition, and by consulting a registered dietitian for individualized nutrition advice. Find more expert advice and learn about the science of the microbiome at danone.ca.
