(NC) Ontario is known for its delicious homegrown asparagus, strawberries, peaches and more. But besides being tasty, there are many reasons to look for local produce when grocery shopping. Here are a few to keep in mind:

Enjoy a natural health boost. A nutritious, balanced diet can have a significant positive influence on your health, from fighting inflammation to reducing the risk of conditions like heart disease, diabetes and even cancer. Fruits and vegetables are leading sources of important nutrients like fibre, vitamins and minerals—regardless of whether they are fresh, frozen or canned.

Support the local economy. The province’s agricultural sector is massive, with over 125 different fruit and vegetable crops grown across 245,000 acres of land. The industry generates over $4.2 billion in economic activity annually, making up over a third of Canada’s fruit and vegetable production.

Make a greener choice. Buying local is also better for the environment, as it means a shorter journey from farm to table, which reduces emissions and minimizes food waste. Plus, you’re supporting Ontario farmers who are using environmentally friendly practices for sustainable production. This includes investments in technologies that allow for more efficient use of water, energy and fertilizer.

Strengthen our food security. Growing our own food helps protect us from disruptions in the global food supply. The more we produce locally, the less vulnerable we are to changes or shortages in the international food system. Supporting local farms makes our food system more resilient and secure.
