(NC) Many Ontarians are heading outdoors to tackle long-planned DIY projects, including building and repairing fences, planting trees and landscaping. But before reaching for tools, take a moment to consider a serious and often overlooked hazard: powerlines.
Overhead and underground powerlines can be closer than you may realize, and a single moment of inattention can lead to life-altering consequences. Keeping safety top of mind before starting any outdoor project can help prevent injuries and save lives.
Look for powerlines
Every project should begin with a careful inspection of your property. Overhead powerlines may be partially hidden by tree branches or positioned behind sheds or fences.
If digging is involved, it’s important to contact Ontario One Call to locate underground powerlines owned by your utility company. For privately owned underground powerlines, a separate private locate is also necessary.
Stay three metres back from overhead powerlines
Once you’ve identified all powerlines, plan your project to keep it at least three metres away from them throughout the job. Always keep yourself and your tools roughly the length of a 10-step ladder away. It’s important to remember that you don’t have to touch a powerline to receive a shock. Electricity can jump, or arc, to nearby people or equipment.
Carry tools horizontally
Take extra care when handling long objects. Ladders, lumber and pole-style tools are most dangerous when raised or moved vertically. Carry them horizontally whenever possible and stay alert when lifting or repositioning items.
Consider powerlines before planting
Landscaping decisions are more than just aesthetic. When planting trees, choose locations where mature growth won’t interfere with overhead powerlines. If existing trees are already nearing powerlines, contact your utility company or a certified utility arborist and never attempt to prune trees near powerlines yourself.
Always be alert. When electricity is involved, caution is always the safest approach. Learn more at esasafe.com/stoplooklive.
