(NC) Thanks to the more than 125 fruit and vegetable crops grown in Ontario, it’s never too hard to eat healthy and local in this province. But it’s even easier in spring and summer, because that’s when we start to see the first crops of the year be ready for harvest and come to market.

Whether it’s at a farmers’ market, on-farm stand or the grocery store, here are a few Ontario-grown fan favourites to keep your eyes out for when shopping:

Asparagus. The season always unofficially starts with this tasty and fast-growing spear that shoots out of the ground long before other crops start to grow. Available from mid-May to early July, asparagus is harvested daily to ensure maximum freshness.

Strawberries. A favourite on the local food calendar, we can start seeing the first field-grown strawberries on store shelves at the end of April if it’s an early spring. Peak strawberry season is April to June, but you’ll find local strawberries available right into the fall, and greenhouse varieties year-round.

Beans. Fresh green and yellow beans are available at local markets, stands and stores starting in June. They make a perfect quick side dish to a weekday meal or can dress up a special occasion such as Mother’s Day or Father’s Day.

Cherries. July marks the start of Ontario’s fresh cherry harvest. It’s a short season, but keep an eye out for both locally grown sweet and sour cherries—a delicious and healthy treat that you can enjoy fresh, turn into jam or freeze for tasty desserts all year long.

Sweet corn. Nothing marks the arrival of outdoor summer eating in Ontario quite like fresh corn on the cob. The first locally grown sweet corn is usually available as of about mid-July, but can be enjoyed right through to Thanksgiving boiled, steamed, barbecued or even in the microwave.
