Shining a light on the experience of blindness

(NC) One and half million Canadians are blind, Deafblind or have low vision. But unless you’re one of those people, or know someone who’s blind, you may not give much thought to the barriers they face.

CNIB, one of Canada’s oldest non-profit organizations, is working to improve accessibility by raising awareness of the day-to-day challenges facing people who are blind.

Chief operating officer Angela Bonfanti shares her insights:

“We spoke with thousands of Canadians impacted by blindness to better understand their needs, goals, and the barriers they face. The three most urgent challenges identified were a general lack of awareness about the realities of living with blindness, inaccessible transportation systems, and insufficient support in the education and health-care systems for families and children who are blind, low vision and Deafblind.”

The non-profit has launched a new five-year strategic plan, called The Way Forward, to create a barrier-free world for people who are blind, and they’re calling on Canadians to join its mission.
